Emery Oleochemicals Advances Development of a Next‑Generation Alternative to BBSA
(May, 2026) - N‑Butylbenzene sulfonamide (BBSA, CAS 3622‑84‑2) is widely used as a plasticizer in polyamide (PA) materials, where it supports durability and improved flexibility. BBSA is commonly incorporated into coatings, adhesives, and molded PA components for a variety of industrial applications.
As regulatory expectations continue to evolve, material selection is increasingly influenced by health, safety, and environmental considerations. According to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), BBSA may cause organ damage through prolonged or repeated exposure and is classified as harmful to aquatic life with long‑lasting effects. These classifications require specific hazard statements to be included on Material Safety Data Sheets.
In response, Emery Oleochemicals—drawing on its long history as a supplier of safe, naturally derived chemicals—is developing an alternative plasticizer designed to replace BBSA. This next‑generation solution features 100% biobased carbon content and requires no chemical hazard labeling, offering a meaningful safety and sustainability advantage for customers.
Final application testing is currently underway in Emery’s application laboratory. Initial results indicate that this new addition to the EDENOL® product family can effectively substitute BBSA in targeted applications while maintaining performance expectations.
Emery Oleochemicals plans to share further updates on this promising development in the third quarter of 2026.
