International Earth Day celebrations at Emery Oleochemicals Malaysia
26 Apr 2012 - Emery Oleochemicals Malaysia first Community Cleanup or “Gotong Royong” was held on Sunday, 22 April - coinciding with the world’s International Earth Day celebrations. The event, a collaborative effort between team members and volunteers made up of business partners and representatives from the local community and authorities; began with volunteers arriving to register themselves for this meaningful activity as early as 7.15am.
Participants were provided with an “Earth Day Bag” consisting of a customized cap, towel, a bottle of water, a pair of gloves and garbage bags. Each volunteer was also assigned to one of the four cleaning zones spread across the 1.5km creek surrounding the plant. The day’s event began with a welcome address by Najib Rashid, Regional General Manager, Asia Pacific. Aside from providing participants with details of the Earth Day initiative, he also reiterated the importance of each person doing their part in using resources (electricity, water) wisely and not to take its availability for granted.
Energized from the breakfast provided, volunteers got into action with about 35 persons per group. Removing garbage ranging from plastics to cans to bottles, the occasional surprise ‘find’ like old clothing and shoes provided an avenue for jokes and laughter – a needed reprieve from the morning heat. Professional assistance by trained grass cutters and chain saw operators were engaged to assist in the removing of overgrown vegetation alongside the creek banks.
The gotong royong, concluding sometime noon, came to a close with a thank you speech by Shamsol Anuar, Vice President and Chief Human Resource Officer and the local village head; and was followed by lunch.
