Emery Oleochemicals reinforces natural-based product expansion goals as sponsor at the inaugural Bio-products World Showcase and Conference

5 October 2012 -  Emery Oleochemicals, a world leader in natural-based chemicals, is geared to showcase its product portfolio of sustainable solutions that are recognised for their ability to improve processing efficiencies, deliver outstanding technical performance, and enhance environmental safety. Predominantly made from natural oils and fats, the products are offered through global operations that include four manufacturing facilities spanning three regions: Asia Pacific, Europe and North America.

The firm’s natural-based products provide customers an expansive solution that caters to application needs in high-growth industries such as agriculture, automotive, building and construction, electrical and electronics, food and beverage, furniture and bedding, home and personal care, industrial and oilfield lubricants, packaging, pharmaceutical and textiles.

Leveraging a strategic partnership with event hosts, Bioproducts Innovation Center (OBIC) at The Ohio State University, Emery Oleochemicals believes in the value of bringing together various players of the bio-based industry at this forum. As a first-hand beneficiary of joint research work and strategic partnerships, the company’s eco-polyols product line, for example, has seen commendable growth and acceleration in area of bio-products commercialization.

Through a research funded by the United Soybean Council and the Ohio Soybean Council, Battelle Memorial Institute entered into a licensing agreement for Emery Oleochemicals to commercialize a patented technology that allows polyols built from renewable resources to produce adhesives, both rigid and flexible foams, and polyurethane coatings. Supplying an alternative to fossil-fuel based solutions that still deliver on performance and have the added benefit of being environmentally friendly; the commercialization enhances a bio-based economy by giving farmers an additional outlet for their crops.

In light of the company’s timely focus in expanding its natural-based, high-value specialty derivatives; the agreement with Battelle signalled yet another milestone for Emery Oleochemicals who has been steadily implementing its growth and innovation strategies in specialised, customisable and sustainable solutions in order to afford the marketplace with a new line of value-added solutions derived from renewable raw materials.

Other growth initiative in North America is the Cincinnati manufacturing facility technology and capacity expansion which will position us as the first specialty chemicals company to manufacture a unique line of bio-polyols that uses both renewable and recycled feedstocks. Through a US$50 million investment and following the technology acquisition of INFIGREEN® Recycled Polyols, the new state-of-the-art plant will produce high-performance solutions for the automotive, furniture and bedding, building and construction and major appliances (white goods) industries. The building of the new facility also means that Emery Oleochemicals is boosting its in-house proprietary technology and R&D capabilities, transforming our North America operations into an integrated site to deliver high-performance solutions.

Emery Oleochemicals credits its roots to Cincinnati, since it began here in 1840. This project therefore, reinforces the company's long-term commitment to the development of the local community. Having been a part of the many successes of the city, the facility is also expected to produce natural-based chemicals for the home and personal care and agriculture markets, further cementing our position as the preferred partner in many leading industries.

As we operate manufacturing sites globally and in a highly regulated industry, our sustainability aspirations go beyond our natural-based product portfolio. With an operational goal to reduce our environmental footprint, a number of award-winning and sector-leading sustainability initiatives were implemented. In Cincinnati, the site now uses biogas from our waste water discharge contributing to a new portfolio of renewable power. This allowed us to phase out coal from our portfolio of direct energy source and saw a reduction of 30% of waste water production.

The Emery Oleochemicals North America operations have taken unique steps to reduce the amount of rainwater going to the local municipal sewer district. A bioswale - consisting of a belt of plant life that naturally cleanses rainwater before it is discharged into the river, was built and quickly developed into a biodiversity hotspot attracting a myriad of insects and the beautiful Monarch butterflies.

The project was certified as a wildlife habitat by the American National Wildlife Federation and as a Monarch Waystation by American Monarch Watch. It additionally won the prestigious 2012 Cincinnati Eagle Award in recognition of Excellence in Environmental, Health, Safety and Security.

Today the company employs over 250 people in Ohio and has a total diverse workforce of more than 1,000 people across its global network providing customisable, renewable-based solutions for its business partners in over 50 countries. Emery Oleochemicals aggressive growth journey is backed in-depth market insights, vertical integration and include global expansions and investments in the three regions it operates in.

With solutions designed to achieve equilibrium in balancing habitability, prosperity and profitability, our products are represented by our Agro Green, Bio-Lubricants, Eco-Friendly Polyols, Green Polymer Additives, Home & Personal Wellness and OleoBasics business units.
