Emery Oleochemicals Presents Additives for Sustainable Plastics Processing at the K 2019 in Düsseldorf

DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY (Sept. 17, 2019) - From October 16th - 23rd, Emery Oleochemicals’ Green Polymer Additives (GPA) business will showcase its portfolio of natural-based additives at this year’s K-fair in Düsseldorf, Germany at Hall 8b booth A58.

The GPA product portfolio includes lubricants, plasticizers, viscosity depressants, antistatic and antifogging agents as well as release agents made from renewable resources. Sold under the brand names LOXIOL®, EDENOL® and EMEROX®, these additives enable or optimize the production process while also improving the properties of the final plastics part. Using products from natural-based resources, companies can contribute towards sustainable and resource-saving production. Emery’s LOXIOL®, EDENOL® and EMEROX® additives are well known as high-quality and reliable products for the plastics industry.

Bio-based Additives

In many cases, bio-based additives are comparable to, or even outperform, fossil-based additives. One of these examples is the replacement of hydrocarbon waxes such as paraffin, Fischer-Tropsch and polyethylene waxes. Compared with petrochemical-based lubricants, the bio-based alternative is slightly more compatible to the polymer resulting in a better distribution over the surface. This, in turn, can offer cost benefits since it is worth evaluating to utilize these additives in lower dosages.

Another example is the alternative to montanic wax and its derivatives. Montanic wax is extracted from brown coal through the use of hazardous chemicals in the refining and bleaching processes. A very limited number of sources for montanic waxes resulted in a severe shortage about one decade ago. Although the shortage has now been overcome, the number of sources is still small. However, multiple LOXIOL® products can successfully be used as alternatives. They are free of montanic compounds, but offer similar performance. And, through use of renewable sources, Emery Oleochemicals can offer security of supply of these products to the compounder, masterbatcher or polymer processor.

Renewable LOXIOL® and EDENOL® plastic additives are not just a passing trend. They are backed by over 60 years of technical expertise and plastics industry knowledge. The pioneers of this technology are also its ongoing innovators: Emery Oleochemicals.

Recent Product Developments

LOXIOL® A 7: An internal antifogging agent based to 70 % on natural raw materials. It is incorporated directly into the plastics in the dryblending step. LOXIOL® A 7 shows optimal compatibility in PVC-formulations and an improved antifog effect compared with standard products. It has been successfully tested in cold fog and hot fog applications. The reduced pour point ensures an easy handling at cool warehouse temperatures.

LOXIOL® AF 80: An external antifogging agent based to 100 % on natural raw materials. It is applied onto the finished plastics product, such as films or sheets, as a water or solvent based solution. It can also be used as part of the coating. The advantages of external application are that it does not affect the characteristics, such as viscosity, of the polymer melt. It is also possible to treat small lots of plastic products, and much lower dosages are needed compared with internal application. LOXIOL® AF 80 is suitable for plastics such as PET, PC, or polyolefin.

LOXIOL® AF 90 is an antifogging agent free of animal-derived materials. It is suitable for polyethylene and polypropylene films. LOXIOL® AF 90 shows excellent hot and cold fogging test results in both polypropylene types. Especially in cold fogging applications, it shows superior performance compared with other additives offered as antifogging agents.

LOXIOL® 3290 is an internal antistatic agent based to 100 % natural raw materials. It is suitable for rigid PVC applications, such as films and sheets. LOXIOL® 3290 is designed to be incorporated into the plastics material in the dryblend or compound. After the thermoplastic conversion like extrusion, injection molding or calendering, the additive migrates to the plastics surface to avoid the buildup of static charge. Residual antistatic agent in the polymer bulk serves as a reservoir in case the material at the surface is removed in any way. LOXIOL® 3290 shows a very good antistatic performance, has food contact approval and a much lower impact on the transparency of the finished article compared with alternative products, such as paraffin sulfonates.

Metal and Ceramic 3D Printer Filaments

With more than 25 years of experience in metal injection molding, Emery Oleochemicals has developed a binder system that can be used for almost every sinterable powder. The process properties of the feedstock such as flowability, release effect, rigidity and flexibility can be adjusted by tailoring the binder composition. The solvent as well as the green and brown part scrap can be recycled, which makes Emery’s binder system most sustainable. The Green Polymer Additives team will demonstrate their binder system for 3D filament print by printing various metal and ceramic parts directly at their booth A 58 in Hall 8b. See firsthand the advantages of Emery’s binder system at the K fair in Düsseldorf.
